The legal battle over the guardianship of Nipsey Hussle’s daughter, Emani, has taken another turn as Tanisha Foster, the late rapper’s ex-girlfriend, faces a setback in her fight to regain custody. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge recently denied Tanisha’s request to depose Nipsey’s brother, Sam Asghedom, just weeks before the trial is set to begin. This decision adds another layer of complexity to an already contentious case that has been brewing since Nipsey’s tragic death in 2019.
Judge Denies Tanisha’s Request to Depose Sam Asghedom
Tanisha Foster has been locked in a legal battle with Nipsey Hussle’s family over the guardianship of their 10-year-old daughter, Emani. Since Nipsey’s passing, his family has served as Emani’s co-guardians, a decision Tanisha has been fighting to overturn. In a recent attempt to strengthen her case, Tanisha filed an urgent request to depose Sam Asghedom, Nipsey’s brother and one of the co-guardians.
However, the judge denied her request, stating, “The Court finds that insufficient evidence has been provided to grant the matter on the calendar this date based upon the reading of the moving papers and consideration of all presented evidence.”
This ruling is a significant blow to Tanisha’s efforts, as the trial to determine Emani’s guardianship is scheduled to begin on February 25.
The Origins of the Guardianship Battle
Tanisha Foster initially agreed to let Nipsey’s family take guardianship of Emani after his death in March 2019. At the time, she believed it was in her daughter’s best interest, citing her financial struggles and a desire to maintain the stable lifestyle Emani had enjoyed before Nipsey’s passing. Tanisha also claimed she was verbally assured that Nipsey’s family would act in Emani’s best interests.
However, Tanisha now alleges that those promises were broken. In court filings, she accused Nipsey’s family of using their wealth and influence to limit her visitation rights and financial support, making it difficult for her to be present in Emani’s life.
“There are no circumstances or events in my life that would disqualify me for regaining my exclusive role as Emani’s parent,” Tanisha wrote in her petition. “Emani routinely asks me when are she and I going to be able to live together. She longs to be with me as her mother. I am begging the court to terminate the existing guardianship.”
