David Schwimmer, best known for his role on Friends, has recently called on Elon Musk to take action against rapper Kanye West, who has been sharing disturbing and antisemitic remarks on social media. Schwimmer’s strong stance comes after Kanye, now known as Ye, made a series of controversial statements on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Schwimmer’s Public Plea for Action
Schwimmer took to Instagram on Saturday to express his concern about Ye’s posts and Musk’s decision to allow the rapper to maintain a significant presence on X, despite his history of hate speech. In a direct message to the social media mogul, Schwimmer wrote:
“We can’t stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate-filled, ignorant bile… but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone, Mr. Musk.”
He also pointed out the reach of Ye’s words, stating, “Kanye West has 32.7 million followers on your platform, X. That’s twice as many people than the number of Jews in existence. His sick hate speech results in REAL LIFE violence against Jews.”
Schwimmer’s passionate post continued with further condemnation of Ye’s rhetoric, emphasizing the dangerous implications of his words. He warned, “Silence is complicity,” calling for action to protect the public from the rapper’s harmful influence.
The Controversial Posts
Kanye West’s latest outburst on X included deeply offensive and inflammatory remarks. The rapper posted, “I don’t like or trust no Jewish person, and this is completely sober with no Hennessy.” His comments escalated as he declared, “I’m a Nazi,” and made other vile statements such as, “I’m racist. Stereotypes exist for a reason and they all be true.” He further declared, “I love Hitler. Now what bitches. I’m never apologizing for my Jewish comments.”
The posts ignited widespread backlash, with many calling for Ye to be banned from social media platforms for his blatant hate speech. Schwimmer’s call for Musk to take swift action was echoed by many who felt that Ye’s platform should be revoked in light of the consequences his words have had on marginalized communities.
Kanye West’s History of Controversy
This latest incident is not the first time Kanye West has stirred controversy. In 2022, Ye was suspended from X after posting a swastika and making additional antisemitic remarks. His previous actions led to real-world repercussions, including the loss of lucrative partnerships, such as Adidas severing ties with him.
Despite these previous suspensions, Kanye’s continued presence on X has raised concerns about the platform’s responsibility in moderating harmful content. Schwimmer’s recent plea highlights the importance of addressing hate speech on social media and preventing the spread of harmful ideologies.
